Dr. Frank Shuman IV

Dr. Frank Shuman IV grew up in a small town on the Louisiana-Texas border called Orange. He gained experience with animals working at the local mixed animal veterinary practice that served the close-knit community.

After high school, he earned an undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Texas. During his time in Austin, he was able to visit and enjoy the active lifestyle and entertainment that Central Texas has to offer. These great experiences stuck with him and created a goal in mind to establish deep roots in the area one day.

Dr. Shuman was accepted and completed a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. During his time in College Station, he was part of the team working in the Gastrointestinal Lab at Texas A&M that optimized tests for diagnosing multiple diseases. This work has led to a better understanding of specific diseases that have chronically plagued our companion animals.

Frank’s first position upon graduation was with the Houston SPCA where he quickly ascended to Medical Director. This position afforded him the opportunity to work with companion animals, farm animals, wildlife, and occasionally with large exotic cats. The shelter's high case load allowed Dr. Shuman to gain advanced experience with soft tissue and orthopedic surgery and become proficient in managing critical cases. Frank can be seen treating animals that have been severely neglected and abused on Animal Cops Houston which airs on Animal Planet.

In 2013, Dr. Shuman became an adjunct professor for Texas A&M University where he initiated and managed the Shelter Medicine and Animal Welfare rotation for 4th-year veterinary students.

Dr. Shuman finally settled in Dripping Springs and has been active in the community through the Chamber of Commerce and participating in this community’s many local events over the last few years. He has been constantly striving to build close relationships with people and their pets. You will often see him working on a project around the hospital trying to create a more inviting and stress-free environment.

Frank currently resides on the Hays County line and enjoys spending time with his wife, two children, and their dogs Tucker and Jack. Soccer is still one of his passions as well as the many other outdoor activities Austin has to offer.
